Leadership by Birth Year

This query tool enables the user to select a single birth-year cohort, or many cohorts in succession, and to further select the position and the state or region. The database will then list all leaders meeting these criteria. It will also provide other information about them, including breakdowns by years in office, leadership shares, terms served, age of entry and of death, and party.

Person Share: The Person Count as a share of all persons selected by the query—that is, holding the office during the selected congresses. Term Share: The number of two-year terms served by all leaders in the Person Count as a share of all terms served by all leaders selected by the query—that is, holding the office during the selected congresses. Avg Terms Overall: Number computed by averaging the total number of terms served by leaders in selected birth year range, disregarding changes in party affiliation by individuals. That is, if leader “X” serves 2 years as an Independent and 5 years as a Democrat, that leader’s total service of 7 years will be factored in to both party’s calculations. Avg Terms Unique: Number computed by averaging only the terms served while affiliated with each unique party. Avg Age at Entry: Average of all leaders’ ages at the beginning of their first term served. Avg Age at Death: Average lifespan of leaders having a known date of death.
